Haiti's Devastating 7.0 Earthquake at Port Au Prince

Haiti Earthquake Poll

January 12th, 2010, is a day that will be sealed in the minds of many Haitians around the world.

It was a Tuesday that was probably like any other Tuesday. People from port-au-prince thought it was just another regular day for them. Little did they know how their lives could drastically change in a span of a few seconds.

At approximately 4:53pm local time, a 7.0 earthquake struck the region.

Right now, everyone is feeling the loss of Haitians who have recently experienced the cataclysmic effects of this terrible earthquake. People who live in other countries are still waiting for word from loved ones who may or may not be alive. This can be the most difficult task because when you have no means of contact, your mind could assume the worst of everything. The uncertainty of it all is crushing, and while the citizens of Haiti are trying to rebuild whatever is left of their former homes, the world is keeping a silent vigil and hoping for the best for those who have survived and have no means of getting back on their feet, at least, not easily.

The government of Haiti is currently appealing for aid and support form concerned people. This is a matter of man working with his fellowmen. Where you live is relevant and this is a time where others could extend help in whatever means possible. Right now, workers of Port-au-Prince are picking up the rubble of the 7.0 magnitude quake that hit the land last Tuesday, January 12. The death toll is expected to exceed 100,000. And while Haitians are still hoping for the best for those who are stuck trapped underneath buildings and houses, each day adds more on the death count.

Basic services such as water and electricity have yet to go back to full service, and President Rene Preval said that his streets need to be cleaned. The tremor flattened out the land, claiming an high number of lives and garnering damages that amount to more than hundreds of millions of dollars. Humanitarian organizations have tried to reach the site as soon as possible, but due to damaged roads and fallen debris everywhere, it isn't going as quickly as planned. Nonetheless, one must never lose hope and stop trying.

If you would like to help, there are things you can do. 3 organizations that come to mind are Help Haiti Now (HelpHaitiNow.org), World Vision (WorldVision.ca) and Doctors Without Borders (DoctorsWithoutBorders.org).
